Ontario’s Latest Immigration Draws: A Spotlight on the GTA

2026-05-02       08:16 [EDT]

Navigating the complexities of Canada’s immigration system requires up-to-date information and expert guidance. Ontario’s recent immigration draws have once again focused on the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), providing new opportunities for skilled professionals in key sectors. This article explores the details of these draws, the targeted occupations, and the implications for prospective immigrants.

Overview of Ontario’s Recent Immigration Draws

On April 30, the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) conducted two significant draws under its Employer Job Offer streams. A total of 997 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) were issued, predominantly targeting professionals in the healthcare, construction and trades, administration, and technology sectors. These draws primarily focused on candidates residing in Canada with valid work or study permits and job offers within the GTA, which includes Durham, Peel, Toronto, and York regions.

Breakdown of the Draws

The April 30 draws involved two streams: the Foreign Worker Stream, which accounted for 720 ITAs, and the International Student Stream, with 277 ITAs. Notably, the cutoff scores were lower than those in the previous GTA-targeted draw on March 25, making it more accessible for candidates. This represents the sixth round of selections in April, underscoring the province’s commitment to addressing labor market demands.

Occupations in Demand

A diverse range of 52 occupations was targeted across both streams in these draws. Key professions included senior managers, human resources managers, engineers, computer and information systems specialists, healthcare managers, psychologists, and registered nurses, among others. The draws highlighted a significant demand for tech-related and engineering roles, reflecting ongoing needs in these sectors within the GTA.

Steps After Receiving an ITA

Upon receiving an ITA, candidates and their employers must take prompt action. Employers need to review the employer guide and submit an application for position approval within 14 days. Subsequently, candidates should log in to the OINP e-Filing Portal to submit their applications within 17 days. Successful candidates can then apply for permanent residence with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), a vital step towards achieving their Canadian PR aspirations.

Upcoming Changes in Ontario’s Immigration Landscape

This flurry of activity comes ahead of significant changes to Ontario’s immigration system, set to take effect on May 30, 2026. The amendments will abolish existing streams, including those for Foreign Workers and International Students, and introduce a consolidated Employer Job Offer stream along with new pathways. As Ontario prepares for these changes, prospective immigrants need to stay informed and seek professional guidance to navigate the evolving landscape effectively.
